Hurricane Ike Photos in Walden on Lake Houston / Susan Brown, Your Texas Connection, Keller Williams Realty

Due to Hurricane Ike, at this time last year in Walden on Lake Houston, we were in the middle of 11 days without power. We were able to heat water for coffee because we still had natural gas power. AND a friend loaned us her french press for coffee. Cooking was a different story because most food had spoiled and the grocery stores had looonnngggg lines (as did the gas stations, my 4 hour wait is another story).

We learned to live by flashlight & candles. We glistened a lot (remember in the South ladies don't sweat - they glisten) and depended on the kindness of neighbors & friends. As power was restored, those kind souls offered laundry facilities, bags of ice, recharging for cell phones (which only worked when FEMA released the cell towers), food, air conditioning & TV (we almost cried when we got to watch Dancing with the Stars).

When IHOP reopened, we were there exclaiming, "These are the best pancakes I've ever tasted!" When a friend's pizzeria reopened, we were there washing dishes in thanks for recharging phones & laptops. When a neighbor said land lines for phones still worked, we dug out those old "princess" phones and viola! we had real phone connections.

Hurricane Ike roared through Atascocita in the middle of the night and the noises outside were different than anything I've ever heard. In the morning, our street in Walden on Lake Houston didn't look too bad. A few limbs down here and there but for the most part fairly unscathed. We jumped in the car to survey the rest of the neighborhood and that is when we realized that Hurricane Ike had made quite an impact on the rest of Walden. It was sobering and difficult to hold back the tears.

We are a wooded, golf course community on Lake Houston. Lots of trees had fallen and just as many had been ripped out by the roots. Cleanup began immediately. Everyone was outside cutting up trees and clearing debris.

All in all we were blessed with our situation. Sure we had to suffer for a few days without electricity and a closing had to be postponed but everyone we knew was safe and sound. It's hard to believe that was a year ago - time sure flies!
